It started out with visits to the butcher alleys in Jamalpur, Ahmedabad where generations lived. Me and Ann who were working individually on characters based on butchers paid a visit to observe, question and note. Our sketchbooks were laid with sketches both live and in studio.
It is here where I met several butchers who were quite welcoming to outsiders like us. I interviewed a few of them to understand their motives in life, familial background, everything i ould think of including what they like to eat, wear, who their pets are, most importantly what DRIVES them. Like Akbarbhai, the namesake of my future original character was a 50 year old man whose only living relative was his mother running a butcher stall to pay for her medical bills. And Muhammad, butcher by day and rickshaw driver by night.

During the interview, I questioned the butchers about their equipments and their choice of the same. Some used specialty knives - most of them getting their equipment from a neighbouring area.

On exploring the crimson-splattered streets of Jamalpur, the friendly, wholesome butcher Akbarbhai came through as a distinct character based on the wholesome yet sturdy butchers of Ahmedabad. Although born into this profession, he would be a humane individual with decent morals. His best friend Biru however, a chicken makes sure that he has his fair share of adventures and creates havoc whenever possible for our humble worker.
I thought a fun, simple poultry silhouette could add some charm, with a little personality coming through in the shape or stance.
